Abondance is a breed originating from the Abondance Valley in Haute-Savoie. It is almost exclusively found in Reblochon and Abondance cheese country.
It is instantly recognisable by its mahogany coat. The head, legs, tail and belly are white and the cows often have marks around eyes that resemble glasses (these marks actually help to protect it from the sun). It has a hard foot and its agility while walking is well suited to the mountainous terrain of Reblochon country. The quality of its milk (protein to fat ratio) is ideal for cheese processing.
